Kanex introduces HDMI to VGA and Digital Audio adapters for Apple TV 4

Kanex announced two HDMI adapters for the 4th generation Apple TV: the Digital Audio Adapter provides an optical audio port to connect a surround sound system to the new Apple TV, while the HDMI to VGA Adapter connects a VGA-ready TV, monitor or projector with audio support.

Kanex Digital Audio Adapter

Although the new Apple TV brought a host of new features, it also took away its optical audio output, leaving many users with no easy surround sound system solution. Kanex Digital Audio Adapter allows Apple TV 4 users to keep their existing home theater hardware.

It supports 7.1 and 5.1 surround sound via standard optical audio, or 2.0 surround sound via 3.5mm audio port.

It’s available on Amazon for $59.95.

Kanex HDMI to VGA Adapter

Kanex HDMI to VGA Adapter allows users to connect an Apple TV to a TV, monitor or projector equipped with VGA. High quality audio is also supported with a 3.5mm port for external speakers.

With the Kanex adapter, AirPlay mirroring from iPhone, iPad or Mac can be used with an existing projector, eliminating the need to upgrade to a new HDMI equipment.

It’s available from Kanex website for $59.95.

Both adapters are also compatible with older Apple TVs.

As announced by Tim Cook last week, the 4th generation Apple TV went on sale today and is now available to order from the Apple Online Store. First deliveries begin later this week.

My Apple TV has video issues – The Apple TV video troubleshooting guide

You are here probably because your Apple TV’s visual output to the television is not as expected. This can be due to a variety of reasons and manifests in different ways. So, before you take your Apple TV to an Apple Store for repair, try this guide to learn how you can fix some common video issues with it.

Case 1. My TV screen is completely black, frozen at a frame or is blurred

Step A. Check the television set, cables and peripherals

Verify if the TV’s source is set to your Apple TV HDMI connection. If not, refer your television manual and change it using your remote. If this is the first time you are firing up the Apple TV, check if your HDTV matches Apple’s minimum resolution requirements. Don’t worry, almost all of them do.
Inspect if the Apple TV power cable and HDMI cables are undamaged and properly inserted.
If you have cables going through home theater receivers, splitters, repeaters or switches, try bypassing them and connect directly to the television. If the video issue resolves now, the defect is in the peripheral used and you can get it corrected.
The HDMI cable you are using might be unidirectional. So try flipping the connection between Apple TV and television. If available, try using another HDMI cable also.

Step B. Troubleshoot the Apple TV

Verify if the Apple TV is getting power. Press any button on your Remote and see if a white light responds at the face of the Apple TV. If not, check the power cable and try using a different outlet.
If Apple TV is getting power, try rebooting it. You can do this easily with your remote by pressing and holding (Menu + Down) buttons for 6 seconds. Wait till Apple TV restarts and check if the issue is resolved.
Now let’s try changing the Apple TV output resolution. Press and hold (Menu + Up) buttons for 6 seconds. Apple TV will now start cycling between various resolutions for around 20 seconds each (image above). Whenever you see the display come up, just press the Play button to set it as the native resolution.

Case 2. My Television is displaying wrong or inverted colors

Step A. Check your television settings
Most HDTV have different picture modes like Dynamic, Vivid etc which can interfere with the true color of the output. Refer the television manual to change this mode to Natural using your TV remote.

Step B. Change Apple TV output settings
Go to Settings > Audio & Video > HDMI Output. You will see a menu: Auto, YCbCr, RGB High, RGB Low.

Use the arrow buttons to check out the options one by one. Give a few seconds after selecting an option for changes to get previewed.

Case 3. My TV shows a stretched film or it isn’t filling up the screen

Apple TV natively outputs content in 16:9 aspect ratio. So as long as you have a HDTV, you should be able to see contents in full screen. You can refer the user manual of your television to set your display to 16:9 if it isn’t already.

It is worth noting that when you’re AirPlay mirroring your iPhone or iPad screen, or while playing some movies in non-HD formats, it is normal to see black bars on top or sides of the TV display.

Case 4. I am getting an error “This content requires HDCP for playback”

“HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) is a form of digital copy protection that requires compatibility between your Apple TV and high-definition TV.” So this error might be due to problems with your HDMI cable or HDTV as Apple TV supports HDCP out of the box.

Step 1. First try putting your Apple TV to sleep. Go to Settings > Sleep Now
Wait for about 10 seconds and press the Select button to wake it up again.
Step 2. Check and install if your HDTV has a firmware update.
Step 3. Use a different HDMI cable like the Apple HDMI to HDMI cable.

How to watch Amazon Prime Instant Video on Apple TV

Finally, here is a worthy opponent for the Apple TV, the Fire TV from Amazon and quite evidently, games and Amazon Prime Instant Video streaming are a plus for the latter, right?

Well, let’s wait a bit till Apple announces their next-gen. Apple TV so that we can make a fair Apple TV 4 vs Amazon Fire TV comparison. In the meantime, if you’re craving to get your Amazon Prime Instant Video subscription or rented movies on your Apple TV, here is a way.

Amazon Prime on Apple TV

1. The wireless method – AirPlay

Prime Instant Video has a wonderful iOS app (free on the App Store), which is compatible with your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. Of course, it lets you watch the rented movies or countless other subscription-included ones via this app. The best part is that it supports AirPlay and hence, can broadcast your favorite videos from Amazon Prime to your Apple TV.

How to?

Step 1: Download the free Amazon Instant Video app on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

Step 2: Sign in with your Amazon Prime subscription ID.

Step 3: Search for your favorite content or browse the limitless catalog and find the perfect movie for your mood.

Step 4: Start the movie and click on the AirPlay icon (displayed in the lower right) -> choose Apple TV.

The video should be now playing on your Apple TV. Sit back and watch the movie in full-screen on your HDTV.

2. The alternative method – HDMI out cable (no Apple TV needed)

In case AirPlay is giving you trouble, you can use an HDMI-out cable (Apple Digital AV Adapter is recommended) for the same. It works exactly like AirPlay, but may even be better in case of heavy videos.

Step 0: Get a HDMI-out cable for your device if you don’t have one already (Apple Digital AV Adapter: Lightning or 30-pin).

Step 1 – Step 3 are the same as for the first method.

Step 4: Plug in your AV adapter and connect it to your TV via a HDMI cable. You can use the second slot on the adapter with your lightning or 30-pin connector to charge your device simultaneously.

Step 5: Start the movie, sit back and watch it on your HDTV

Note: both methods require iOS 6 or later.

As already told, these methods do not provide a permanent solution nor an absolute replacement for watching Amazon Prime on Apple TV. But this can surely help you to evade the temptation put forth by the Amazon Fire TV, till the next-gen. Apple TV is announced.

New Apple TV Air concept turns Apple TV into a Chromecast-like HDMI dongle

After the release of iPad Air people began re-imagining iPhones to match the “Air” aesthetics. But what about the possibility of an Apple TV Air? Well, nobody was expecting that. Curved is behind this one too, after the wirelessly rechargeable touch-enabled Apple TV remote concept and the remote slash gamepad concepts, showed off in the last couple of weeks.

Unlike what you might think, the Apple TV Air is not an extremely slimmed down version of the current set-top box, instead, it is a whole new category of device. Similar to Google’s Chromecast and Roku Stick, the Apple TV Air is a HDMI dongle, which plugs directly into your HDTV and streams content from your iPhone or iPad.

According to Curved, the device could be just half the size of the current remote and will work over Bluetooth rather than IR (since it would always be hidden behind your TV). This reduction in size and the plastic used would cut down the price to about $49, which would be the cheapest way ever to AirPlay.

It consists of two parts: the HDMI ‘dongle’ (the actual Apple TV) and a small remote control, both sold together in one box for aprox. 49 $/EUR.

Cult Of Mac’s Buster Heine speculates that if Apple TV Air ever comes to life, it’ll not be an Apple TV replacement, instead a low cost alternative to the costly future powerhouse Apple TVs. Well, that makes some sense.

Netflix bug preventing HDMI output to TVs will be fixed

Netflix finally added full AirPlay support to their app in the latest iOS 7 update but in the process of doing so the company broke the feature which allowed an iOS device to be connected to the TV with the HDMI AV adapter.

Interestingly, it seems the addition of AirPlay has directly caused the problems, with some users speculating that the update was part of some negotiation with Apple and Netflix to encourage users to purchase Apple TVs for the AirPlay feature.

Netflix have commented on the issue stating that they are aware of the problem and it is only affecting a very small amount of users. They are working on a fix to the bug which they will publish “as soon as they can”.

If you’re experiencing this bug, an Apple support thread suggests turning off AirPlay will force video to output via the HDMI adapter.

AirPlay Mirroring Coming to iPhone 4S

First announced for iPad 2 back in June, AirPlay mirroring is now coming to iPhone 4S. This feature will let you see on your TV (with the Apple TV 2 plugged in) exactly what’s on your new iPhone. Although iOS 4 natively supports AirPlay for photos, videos and music, and there are iPhone apps that let you AirPlay pretty everything – web pages (Web Browser for Apple TV), live view of your iPhone’s camera (Camera for Apple TV), maps, text editor (TVOut Genie!) – one thing still missing are games. Well, it will finally change with the arrival of the iPhone 4S and, as this video shows, we can expect it will work as smooth as we are hoping for.

According to Apple, AirPlay mirroring will be available only for iPhone 4S and iPad 2, the only Apple devices powered by A5 chip, as the other devices are simply not powerful enough to handle the mirroring. Hopefully, we’ll soon be seeing an iOS 5 apps with AirPlay feature built-in, which would let us to AirPlay the app without the necessity of mirroring your iPhone.

Short after the iOS 5 has been unveiled, Firemint announced that its Real Racing 2 HD will be the “first title to support full screen wireless gaming over AirPlay”. According to the developer, this won’t be just mirroring – the players will be able to play Real Racing 2 HD on their big screens without a cable, while their iPad 2 displays racing telemetry in real-time.

And if you don’t have the second generation Apple TV, you can also plug in the HDMI cable and mirror your device over the wire as well.
